General Guidelines

Program Description and Requirements

DcShare42.exe runs in the Host computer and provides the proxy connection functions. It is compatible with all Windows versions.

IP Address Selection

When you first run DcShare a pop-up dialog shows the IP adresses available to your computer. You should see one or more network IP address like these:

192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255
172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255
10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255

Select one of them. If you need to change it later click Setup->Local IP addresses.

Note that if you have a Direct Cable Connection you need the connection to be running. In this case, one of the IP addresses will be 192.168.55.1. You should select this one.

Browser Ports Selection

The default browser proxy ports utilized by DcShare are listed below:

HTTP: 8080
HTTPS: 8081
SOCKS: 1080

DcShare allows you to change the ports to any valid numbers (1 to 65535). You should do this if another Internet program utilizes the default ports.
When you access FTP through the browser, it is not necessary to specify the FTP port. Both Internet Explorer and Netscape switch automatically to Socks 4 protocol (port 1080).

Proxy Modes Selection

DcShare supports HTTP, HTTPS, Socks 4, Socks 5 and FTP protocols. For Internet Explorer users I recommend to use HTTP, HTTPS and Socks.

If you designate an HTTP port in your browser proxy settings, the browser will utilize the HTTP protocol even if the Socks protocol is enabled. To enable only the Socks protocol you must leave the HTTP and HTTPS ports empty.

For AOL TCP (proxy) connection you can use the Socks4 or Socks 5 protocols.

Testing DcShare with a Direct Cable Connection

Run your Direct Cable connection.
Run DcShare42 in the Host, click Info and make sure that the Host IP address is 192.168.55.1
Run Setup31 in the Guest, make sure that the Guest IP address is 192.168.55.2 and click Test.

Windows 95, 98, ME Installation Instructions

For Windows 95, 98, ME you need to have the program called Direct Cable Connection (DCC) installed and running in both computers. In addition, in the Host computer you need to install the Virtual Network Adapter (VPN). Both programs are supplied with Windows.

If you already have DCC, Virtual Network Adapter (VPN) and TCP/IP loaded in your computers, the installation is automatic and it is only required in your Guest computer. Here is the three-step installation procedure:

1. Run Direct Cable in both computers.
2. Run DcShare.exe in the Host.
3. Copy the unzipped installation file Setup31.exe and Help32.html in your Guest. Run Setup.

Guest Computer Setup

Copy the unzipped file Setup31.exe in your Guest computer.

Make sure TCP/IP, IPX/SPX and NetBEUI protocols are enabled in both computers.

Make sure Direct Cable is running in both computers.

Run DcShare in the Host. If you don't know your Host computer IP address, click Info.

Run Setup31.exe, enter your Host IP address and click Setup.

Host Computer Setup

Setting up your mail

1. Run DcShare in the Host and click Setup.
2. In the TCP Services box enter the name of your incoming mail server and port (usually port 110).
3. Click Add and close the Message Box that pops up.
4. In the TCP Services box enter the name of your outgoing mail server and port (usually port 25).
5. Click Add, close the Message Box, click OK and exit DcShare.

Adding TCP, UDP Services

You need to supply some information necessary for programs that do not support HTTP or Socks protocols to work with DcShare (usually mail, ftp not accessed through the browser, telnet, media programs). The information required is:

the name of the site (using the exact spelling)
the TCP or UDP port numbers that the program connects to.

If you don't know the exact name of the site leave the service name blank and enter just the TCP or UDP port(s) required by your application. Or, you can enter an informative service name preceded by a wild card (*). Up to 20 TCP or UDP ports can be entered.
